de portables
started as a rock-n-roll guitar trio from Bruges. In this Venice of the north,
where hardly anything happens, three young heartbreakers who share the same interests
in the Spice Girls, a pinguin collection and x-rated movies, started a band in
October 1996. Cenneth, Hans and Wio wrote many songs together - mostly instrumentals
- with raw mathematical structures, an intense lack of emotion, and a whole lot
of fun. In the autumn of '97, they released their first tape zon i bos on the
macho tape label Studio Muscle (sold out now). During the recordings for that
tape, Belgiums wildest and best known pigfarmer Ed Nolbed joined de portables.
The songs became much more subtle, inwardly more complex, but outwardly easier
to understand.
Meanwhile, de portables started to gather a whole bunch
of solo-and-side-projects around them. Jürgen surprised the world with his two
köhn cd's and his "back to nolbeddy" hidden rabbit. Hans joined osmose, where
he, aside from the drumming, tried to calm down the ever fighting songwriters
of the band. Jurgen and wio did some obscure frambooze action together. Wio recorded
two albums and some 7"s, and last but not least: recently we discovered Hans's
secret solo-recordings under the moniker hans olo.
however, between
the recording of the first cd( lab.top) and the second one (rosegarden) a full
length tape of new songs was recorded, but remained unreleased for years. this
resulted in the release of omo twist - by tat time, founding member Cenneth had
already left the band, and Bernard,
another fan of Quick-hamburger menu's and champagne and member of Autopilot, joined
de portables. De portables are a quartet again!
