Portland-based Minmae got started when Sean Brooks of TheePsychicHearts found
himself stuck with some studio time his band couldn't use. So he went in alone,
recorded a few tracks, and found himself with a bona fide side project.
Reasons for the startup: a growing disillusionment over 'rehearsal rock', a growing
love for more ambient, lo-fidelity song production, some jungian investigation
informing repressed emotion. He chose the name Minmae in honor of the
singing space celebrity beauty queen of the popular Japanimation sci-fi epic Robotech,
he liked to watch as a child. The songs were later put out as the 'poltergeist
over England' 7".After numerous seven-inches, split seven-inches, and a couple
of CD full-lengths, , Minmae had ceased to be a side project and became a full-on
endeavor. Minmae isn't a pure solo project anymore either. Brooks
is still the core of the band, but most of the time he's assited by two people
when performing live. Line-up changes every now and then, Josh Kempa is the one
that's hanging around for the longest time now. Past collaborators include the
likes Jake Anderson (from Yak Brigade, Celesteville
and Gang Wizard-fame)
Billy Sprague (the man behind rocket racer records) onq (The italian guy with
whom he did a few collaborations) and Danny Powers (from the And/Ors)
Throughout his impressive number of releases, Brooks has proven to be anything
but a one-trick pony. Off course it's very obvious to refer to flying saucer attack
when hearing the fuzz-songs on 'vonsachiang' And the 'sa trappe secret...'
suite will definately please those who loved slint for the tension. But Brooks
is definately a very gifted songwriter. listen to his piano-based track on the
card-carrying... cd. Or his stunning "since
before inertia" album. this one was originally released as cd-r on tapemountain.
But that release really caught the perfect morc-sound: both the songwriting,
and the more experimental sound. so we decided to take care of the tape-release.
The album starts with the polvo-esque track "the bastard", a perfect
example of the first half of the tape: more traditional songs. the second half
is the more 'classic' minmae: none like the previous releases though.
after this recording, minmae recorded ' my quiet life' in the same line-up, before
sean brooks teamed up with a few new band members. as some sort of epilogue to
this period in minmae-history, morc released 'since
before hereafter' a 3" cdr with a live session, originally broadcasted
on kuci radio. i dont think minmae ever sounded like this before, or after this
recording. so that's why it was released as part of ' une
série pour gagner de l'argent'

a sort of epilogue to the 'since beofre inertia' are of minmae. this is a
live session that was recorded for KUCI-radio. it documents minmae in a way the
band never sounded before, and never sounded after this either. And it's the first
part in 'une série pour gagner de l'argent'
