In the early/mid-90’s, when the rest of the post-music youth were flooding NYC’s
art schools & other high music meccas, Brian John Mitchell decided to stay true
to the isolationist style, locking himself away at home in North Carolina in order
to create chilling, emotive, & bombastic tape works.
Remora started
in 1996 as a 4-track based guitar band exploiting effect units to make guitars
into walls of sound. Over the years Remora has developed a dichotomy between the
aggressive ambient sound & a 1919 folk ballad style while blurring both with post-punk
& post-rock elements to form its own self-described "post-angst" style. The music
is angry & caged without being whiney or bitter.
Remora's guitar terrorism
relies on the more drone-based school of thought, where the most interesting sounds
come from minimalist structure and repetition. Unlike some of the more well-known
ambient/noise guitarists, who rely on obtrusive noise and piercing tones, Remora
makes effective use of tonality which is surprisingly soothing despite the noisy
overtones. When vocals are used, they haunt each song beneath the mix, overrun
by a million guitar strings."
