Richie Cunningham's first tape, "Vegan Sexbomb, was recorded in April 1993 in Andrew Willshaw's attic room in Sheffield. Mark Ritchie had travelled down to see an American Music Club gig and, after several drinks, tha tape was written and recorded over a 2 day period. It was lo-fi and ramshackle, but Andrew and Mark were happy with it - both being big Daniel Johnston fans - and had fun doing it, so they named the project Richie Cunningham, after the happy-go-lucky teenager in the TV show 'Happy Days'. He was way cooler than Fonzie!

They repeated the experience later that same year. This time the tape ("Gavin Hogg, Sex God") was written at Mark's house, in the Scottish wilderness of Forth. Andrew and Mark got drunk on Mad Dog 20/20 wine, and put together another tape of lo-fi acoustic bedroom pop. Songs about Anthony Hopkins, cheap wine and fanzines dominated this tape.

The third tape, 'Bring me the head of Gavin Hogg'  was done over a longer time period and was recorded partly on 4 track (with the help of Stephen Boyd) in Glasgow and Sheffield. Part of this tape was made up of 'lost' work, recorded in late 1994 (again, in Sheffield, in a cat shelter where Andrew worked at the time), which was abandoned due it to being, er, shit.

After these three 'classic' releases, some say that Richie Cunningham spectacularly 'lost it' in a George Best style career suicide nosedive of alcohol and serial womanising. But they came back in 1996 with a aplit release with Elephantcopter. This tape included many a fine song, even if it was recorded on an unplugged electric guitar!

Now of course, there is the fine split-release with Pernath, the first tape in the 'soup versus potatoes'-serie - soon followed by an appearance on a morc compilation. since then it's been quiet form richie's side, but still - highly improbably that richie c wont show up again.
