Lowered is a solo and collaborative project founded by UK artist Chris Gowers – whom released a couple of ep’s and albums on morc under the moniker Karina ESP.
Loosely described as “acoustic abstract drone music”, Lowered recordings are slower and more contemplative than the Karina ESP ones , and explore the intricacies of tone, the subjectivity of experience and the nature of environment. A sort of slow-motion chamber music, with silence as the conductor.
Lowered employs reductive playing processes that centre on the timbral qualities of the instruments as well as the space in which they are recorded, allowing the sounds to breathe and evolve. This is not improvised music however, and while aleatoric processes form the basis of many works, compositions are carefully developed to occupy a counterpoint between distance and control.
Recording takes place without any digital effects or treatment, instead relying on experiments with microphone placement and naturally reverberant recording spaces. Earlier recordings resulted in three well-received albums on Hibernate records and Trome.

The ‘empty rooms’ reference Gowers’ move to a new house in a strange town following the death of his wife. As such it is a meditation on loss, dislocation and the silence of absence. A very intense but rewarding listening experience from the man also known as Karina ESP.
