Last episode of the year. no end of year lists or anything: we simply are too slow to have heard all 2023 releases we wanted to hear; by now. instead: we're looking forward to a couple of shows, continue to dig in our pile of 7"s, and play a few recent purchases. no 'exclusive' track, but we'll play a few songs that -by the best of our knowledge) aren't available anywhere online. so that includes tracks by Hessen, Paste, Bright Lights and Paint - a band about which we couldn't find any useful info at all. also: a couple of artists we've played before: iditarod, luster, warm currency, sex tourists, julia p and cucina povera: you heard them here before, but not these tracks.and, not sure why, but we never played boduf songs before? we're compensating up with a rather rare track. ah, there are a few seasonal greetings included. just not the kind you hear all day.

Morc FM episode 30 - november 16th 2023new stuff, old stuff, and i'm still ploughing through my 7" collection. also: the obvious mention of the upcoming morcevent with roxane métayer and goldscammer later this month. the result:

so, i'm still listening to my 7"s in alphabetical order. so: more 7"s than usual. you'll hear tracks from labradford, anne laplantine and Kim Deal that originally appeared on this inconvenient yet beloved format. also: remember 'le jardin des amours' from the last episode? well, you'll hear Lise Barkas & Lisa käuffert's gorgeous interpretation. that is part of the 'lo becat' lp that's out on morc in a few days!
more? i'm talking about shows i attended (linus vandewolken), didn't attend (pj harvey) and will attend (de portables, one last time). special mention for the gorgeous 'fire of love' compilation series, with heartbreaking 50s songs that sound like proto-lofi / garage / minimal shoegaze. and we end with a few dub-influenced recent favorites. a downtempo episode, but a great one!

We're making some major announcements in this episode of morcfm. spreading the word about two records that'll be available next month: a repress of roxane metayer's debut lp, and a soon to be revealed other release, with the Andrée Duffault (photo) track as a hint. get ready for these. trends in this episode: lots of violins! (elisabeth klinck, sourdure, doce fuegos, and of course roxane métayer), quite a bit of lofi (Concubine, 1m54...) and a lot of heavyweights: Shirley Collins, Jackson C Frank, GBV, Smog: we're listening to so big names right now. so: varied as ever, hope you'll enjoy this one!

sort of a classic episode this time: new releases, older release we only recently picked up, old favorites and an unreleased track, and looking forward to a show again. all over vibe: pretty calm. we're starting off with the loudest song, but the overal tone of this one is pretty summer. we had a pretty relaxing summer, and it shows!
Anyway, anyway: we'll ramble about the folk implosion/hope sandoval connection, old demos that were sent via mp3 over 20 years ago and now show up on vinyl, the pronounciation of 'kramer' and the upcoming simon joyner show.

Ah yes. summer. we're being kind of lazy, but made a great episode based on work we did earlier. you'll hear stuff from the early days of morc - the majority that came out on tapereleases, and all of them by 2005 the latest. a couple of these tracks can't be heard anywhere else online. some people we still work with, some people we have no idea what happened to them. as you'll hear, it's not necessarily what you'd associate with morc these days, but i hope it makes sense? still love all of these tracks.
we digitized most of these tapes last year, while we were locked up with covid. and the mix itself is largely based on a dj/talk evening we did at objects and sounds earlier this year, and another radio show we did with namaakkanttekeningen a few years ago. good times!
Anwyay: you'll find info about pretty much all of the artists not linked above somewhere on this page. need to notice: the vollmar track is an outtake from the 'hilversum' 3"cdr, and unreleased. |

a lot of things we picked up the past few months didn't get any airplay here yet. so. get ready for brand new material by Blod, Delphine Dora, Frankie Traandruppel, Hydromedusae, People Skills and Stefan Neville, and because we can: another track from the new soccer committee release.
confession of the month: we only recently got into incredible string band. but that's not even the oldest song in this episode: the 1967 track by The Keggs that you'll hear is an all time favorite here, a standout track on the standout 'back from the grave' series. general conclusion: pretty much everything in this episode is downtempo. why? because we prefer downtempo music, most of the time.

my favorite episodes are the ones in which i can play a song premiere of an upcoming morc-release. this is one of those episodes. so excited to share the track 'reaching' from the forthcoming soccer Committee lp '♥/Lamb', out june 27th on morc. it's Mariska at her very, very best as you'll hear. and: turns out the beginning of the set became a sort of dutch special, with new material by Ambassade, a reissue of Enno Velthuys and inhouse favorite Blessum. more recent-ish tracks by J.Zunz Eyes of the Amaryllis and Ilze Bertrand, and we're ending with a lo-fi special. excuse: sebadoh celebrated the 30th birthday of Bubble and Scrape, which might be my favorite album ever. fun fact: back in 2007, Sebadoh performed the album in the original line-up. that was closer to the release date then we are now to that reunion. so yes, this one has been with us for a loooong time. ending this episode with the most brutal track we've ever played on the show. sorry not sorry.

Morc FM episode 23 - thursday may 4th 2023

This episode is inspired by a recent pilgrimage to Ooy, hometown of the legendary Brinkman label. time for a hommage: we'll play three quite different tracks from releases on the label that introduced us to the 'four track' - i remembering reading the titles of the last few songs on the s/t Nemo-album, and 13-year old me was wondering what '4 track-versions' were. remixes or something? soon enought i'd find out, and never look back. anyway: a gateway to a wonderful world. aside from that: as usual, anything from very minimal stuff (Kate Carr, Maninkari, Alexis Degrenier), to raucous guitarrock (cheater slicks), far out spacerock (Minmae & Jessamine) and multiple folk-oriented tracks.

Lots of piano/keyboard/organsounds in this episode - only noticed that when typing in the full tracklist. in this category: the decayed songs of franciska, an unreleased track by annelies monseré, the keyboardpunk of giorgio murderer, dog lady island's interpretation of chopin's nocturnes on zither, and a special mention to jeanne moreau: this interview with her, put over the music of Satie is taken from the compilaiton 'from brussels with love'. the original tape came with a manuel, describing that you were only supposed to listen to this part once. love the idea, not sure how to translate that to cd. might be an inspiration to put out a compilation tape again :-)
also: new/recent material by Pierre Bastien, Genghis Cohn, Hævner and fords' fuzz inferno (yes, weirdness and punk!), old favorites from Félicia Atkinson and Rudy Trouvé and more. (not much more, but more!)

march is traditionally a month with a lot of shows happening, and this time it's no different. Annelies Monseré (whom we played last time) is doing an album presentation here in ghent on march 31st, and since hellvete and Goldscammer are performing that evening as well, we're playing them here. you'll hear an unreleased Hellvete-track, and a message for goldscammer. more local shows that we refer to: Frankie Traandruppel, Ana Roxanne, and Alasdair Roberts. also: birthday wishes to okraïna, and a few words about the kid congo powers autobiography (that's kid's arm you see on the picture here). to top it off: new/recent work by Carola Anne McGowan (a welcome return!) and Carla dal Forno. + classics by Deux, Dark Day, Ritchie Cunningham, and the regular praise of the work of Ray Raposa. it's a neat episode, really.

Drinks & sounds - the first ten years of morc
|
The kind people of drinks & sounds invited us to play morc-releases and talk about them for a full evening. i'll save you the banter, but these are the tracks of the first ten years of morc we played that night. you'll hear songs from tapes, cdrs and lathe cuts that were never available digitally (well, just one). some people we still work with, some people we have no idea what happened to them. as you'll hear, it's not necessarily what you'd associate with morc, but i hope it makes sense? still love all of these tracks.
(and of course: i played a lot more recent stuff too, but that's all available online via bandcamp etc)

Recently read the book 'you're with stupid', and really enjoyed it. about written by kranky-founder Bruce adams. so: a few references to that in this episode. also: some words about the upcoming label night at cafe oto, with the fine people of Horn of Plenty records. more compliments about 'de algemene verwarring'. love is all around in this episode. maybe it's because valentine's day is coming up?
stuff i meant to say in the show about the book, but didn't / forgot: It's pretty obvious that musicians have influences, but you know: labels do as well. BBPTC, Best Kept Secret, Shrimper, Kraak, Bluesanct, KAW, Unread: all favorites overhere when starting up morc; and of course: KRANKY - which was/is playing a few leagues above these others, but a major insparation none the less. I got into the label via the sampler 'Kompilation' in 1998 and was hooked eversince. I picked up and enjoyed releases by pretty much every artist on that sampler. Some turning into lifelong favorites, and throughout the years: i've been fortunate enough to work with some of these artists as well (Hello Jessica Bailiff! Lichens! Boduf Songs! Dawn Smithson!) so: i'm a kranky fanboy. Not just musically: i've always appreciated the 'artist first' approach of the label, in a way that that's a very direct inspiration for morc. Bruce Adams wrote down what the early years of the label were like, and in a broader perspective: working in the independent music industry in the late 80's - 90s, and what the local scene in chicago was like. A good read: i've never read much about distribution before, and that seems like a world of its own. And of course: great to read the stories about how bands/artists like Labradford (especially Labradford!), Jessamine, SOTL, GYBE! And Roy Montgomery were doing things. Only downside: Bruce tells us the beginning of many, many stories, but the follow up often stops once the path of Bruce and a specific company/artist seperate. Makes me curious to find out the rest, but can't really blame Bruce for not going into detail into that. Also: the book stops in 2002-3, around the time mp3s were shaking up the way distribution etc was run. and a few years before he left Kranky, and started Flingco sound system. A bit of an early ending, i thought. Maybe that's for a second book? anyway: the tracklisting.

the first episode of this year is largely inspired by a recent trip to paris - we unexpectedly got to see a show by Ela Orleans, saw an installation by Patti Smith at the pompidou museum and went recordshopping. as if this episode wasen't french enough yet: track from the Bippp compilation and recent work by roxane métayer too. oh, and during our rambiling, we mention Red Zebra at some point. not sure what happened. hah. you'll hear one unreleased track by pacific walker, whose album got released the day after the broadcast. all in all: more uptempo tracks than usual in this show. it's all good!
